Welcome Open Data Day Hackers

We're joining forces with people who are hacking on all sorts of open data, not just food. Please sign up for the Open Data Hacker ticket (no cost) so we can keep track of numbers. There are also lots of food options in Chinatown close to the office, so you don't need to take the food option.

Join us to help build Open Food data

Get together on International Open Data Hackathon Day and hack together an open standard for food information.  The emphasis will be on real foods (like fish, meat, fruits, vegetables, dairy) and include agricultural beverages like coffee, tea, wine, and beer.

Our aim is to aggregate datasets we've collected, build a simple API to be eventually used by everyone in the world and if time to hack up a demo app to demonstrate the importance of building such an API.

Who?

We need hackers of all stripes - developers, designers, data nerds and more. Have special knowledge about beer, cheese, or coffee? Food geeks more than welcome.

Why Food?

There is an explosion in the number of services created to help people make better choices about how we produce, consume, and interact with food.  Challenges related to the accuracy and completeness of data hamper the rate of innovation.

We have a range of datasets collected and want to write an open API that serves as version one for accessing an open data standard (and data store) for food information.

Rather than building silos, let's work together to federate and interchange food data. Your collaborative contributions will be documented and you'll be able to continue working with the standard and API through a central Github repo.

We will feed you good food from real chefs :)

Food and drinks will be provided.  A working lunch and then dinner/drinks/demos at around 6pm.

But it won't be the usual hackathon fare.  Real chefs will cook some killer dishes, and you'll be well fed.

Cost & Donations

We ask everyone to throw $10 in the kitty to pay for the two delicious meals we'll be enjoying, and to show that you're serious about spending the day moving Open Food Data forward.

For those with food issues who just want to hack, you can choose the no meals option, but we really want everyone to break bread together.
